Thursday 27 February 1879
On Tuesday I got to the Priory later, saw Brett who said Mrs. Lewes wanted her to order 6 shirts made like Mrs. Stuart's; when could I come and see about them? She was better and had been out for an hour and a half. Brett looked more like herself and I too was comforted. Yesterday morning I called about 11 and was taken into the drawing room. -- While Brett left me I looked round -- wondering with tears how she was able to live at all: -- the room looked bright and pretty -- the only change long white curtains to the front windows, like a veil making it impossible for people to see in: the sofa was not against the wall, but out in front of the fire as it was the last time I had been in the room, when he was lying there. Brett said she was already down in the dining room, -- much stronger, "quite cheerful this morning." It was almost as hard as seeing her to pass outside the room with but a door between us. Cards from Herbert Spencer, Tr'fcbner and George Smith were lying on the table. She has offered to see Mrs. Charles Lewes and the children on Saturday.
