Again last Tuesday I went to Cheyne Walk, driven by growing anxiety. The house was not ready or furnished; the man in charge wished to show me over and said Mr. Cross was coming up with furniture mid-day. I wrote to her in the evening and last night heard in reply that she was better, but not to be in town till the end of the month. The physical alienation makes some way. An absence of 9 months, which she could have abridged by a cheap word, makes it impossible to ignore one's fate -- to live a long way off.
