December 1. On Wednesday saw Tr'fcbner, who hadn't much to say; about 170 copies of the book appeared to have been sold in England. I went through some unprofitably strong emotions about a thing he told me. He has got leave to reprint her translation of Feuerbach, 391 and he was so ill-advised as to suggest to Mr. Lewes that some raison d''eatre for a second edition would be advisable and to propose that I should write an introduction on the life and writings of Feuerbach. I was annoyed at my name having been used so without my knowledge, because of course I knew beforehand how unhesitatingly Mr. Lewes would negative such a proposition on her account. But the thrill that went through me when Tr'fcbner was telling his story gave me a rather sad intimation of all the happiness that might be possible -- where such relations were possible.
