My dear John Cross
When I found your card on my table the other evening, I had, as you may suppose, not the faintest idea of the news you had come to tell me! Imagine how the paragraph in this morning's D[aily] N[ews] startled me! It was a shock of surprise, but of very delightful surprise, such as one feels on the very rare occasions in this burdened world, when a great man's love has found its happy haven in a noble woman's heart. Surely it is all that her truest friends, and all that yours, could have desired for both! It will crown her life with peace and contentment, inspire her genius afresh, comfort and sustain her future, without doing violence to the tender memories of the past, and consecrate your own beautiful example of devotedness and fidelity of affection.
Heartiest congratulations, then, my dear fellow, and all best wishes for many years of happy and perfect union, for you both! You will always believe me your affectionate friend
