My dear Pigott
You will I know be terribly grieved to hear that my Father after an illness of eight days has been taken away from us. He died last night at about 6 o'clock having been sinking all through the day. He died quite peacefully and was conscious up to quite a few moments of the end. We have the consolation of knowing that if he had lived he would have suffered from an internal malady which would have gradually become more and more painful and would have carried him off within six months. But you will know what a terrible blow his death is to us, and to my Mother of course quite inexpressible. The Funeral will I expect take place on Wednesday. I do not ask you to come to it, but if as one of my Father's oldest intimate friends you would wish to do so let me know and I will send you word of the exact time fixed.
