My dear Lewes.
There never was better criticism than that on Greek tragic art in the two first pages of your chapter -- called Iphigenia, 618 -- and I make you my compliments. I had felt it all before, but could not have expressed it. Of course I speak of the Greek, not of the German which is to me a book altogether sealed. But not so true are you to truth in your rhapsody as to dead bones. "But -- dead bones for dead bones --," etc. page 287. 619 You know you are only warming an idea. The history of mans mind must have in it more of poetry than the history of man's body, -- even though we throw you in the elephant's.
