My dear Lewes.
On returning home I have found your life of Goethe, for which, I presume, I have to thank you. I do thank you heartily. I must get your name in it some day. I shame to say I never read the former edition. I have already been at work at this, and am charmed with it. Alas, me -- for 11 years I learned Latin and Greek -- nothing else -- and know it now, you, who understand our English schooling, will know how superficially. Of German of course I know nothing. Shall I hereafter have an action against my pastors and masters?

How excellent is your outside got up. 608 Calico -- we call it cloth when we want to be grand, -- has thereon achieved its greatest biblical triumph.
