My dear Lewes.
As to putting Belton E. first in No. 3, 653 do just as you please. I have a strong opinion against putting the novel always first as it indicates an idea that it is our staple; -- which indicates the further idea that the remainder is padding. Were I Editor I think I should always give the novel a distinctive place just before the Chronique. 654 But that is a matter of small, or no, moment.
My revises were returned 4 days since, -- and the non return up to then was not my fault. Indeed I had not asked for revises. But they were sent, and sent without the original proofs, and were therefore useless. I wrote for the original sheets and then returned the revises.
Touching the signing 655 I have been so driven by official work that I have not put a pen to it. But I will. I am not at all anxious as to the number in which it may appear. Indeed it would be too late now for the third. Fourth or fifth will do as well. I shall be with you in about a week.
Who is to do your chronique? If you are in a difficulty I will attempt it. Only, could not the pages be less pressed? It is closer than we at first intended. Poor Billy! 656 Why did he give up?
I have got, just got, No. 2 and have only read your article. 657 It is beautiful, but, oh, so cruel. You are as hard almost as Carlyle; -- without the salve which one has for Carlyle's blows, in the feeling that they are all struck in the dark, and may probably, after all, not be deserved. But it is very beautiful. Your style leaves nothing to be desired.
Enjoying myself! revising a post office with 300 men, the work and wages of all of whom are to be fixed on one's own responsibility! Come and try it, and then go back to the delicious ease and perfect freedom of your Editors chair!
