My dear Mrs. Lewes
Not for your sake but for my own I must write you one line to thank you for your present. 601 I will say nothing further of the book but this; -- that were you now departing from us, as I trust you may not till you have added many another leaf to your wreath, -- you might go satisfied that you had written that which would live after you.
I will get up to you as soon as I possibly can, -- but you are regularly out (with a wise regularity) at the hour at which mortals call.

You will know what I mean when I say that Romola will live after you. It will be given to but very few latter day novels to have any such life. The very gifts which are most sure to secure present success are for the most part antagonistic to permanent vitality.
