The hero of the novel, Adam Bede large and strong young man who has worked hard to become an educated and successful carpenter. Here, he is in the carpenter shop, showing that he is much more dedicated to his craft than the other carpenters. Adam's sheperd dog, Gyp, sits in a bed of wood shavings (Book 1, Chapter 1).
