Title

Maggie and Stephen

Alt Text Description

Grayscale illustration of a man holding a woman’s hand and guiding her down a set of steps. Behind them stands a large house.

Description

Outside Mr. Deane's house, Stephen Guest visits Maggie and they walk together in the garden. Stephen offers Maggie his arm, saying in a low tone, "Do take my arm". Maggie takes his arm, and they walk together around the grassplot. As they approach the house again, Stephen says, "Take care of this step,". Maggie, feeling rescued by the arrival of the step, says, "Oh, I will go in now. Good-evening". She then withdraws her arm and runs back into the house. (Book 6, Chapter 6)
