Mary Garth Refuses Mr. Featherstone's Offer

This illustration depicts Mr. Featherstone offering Mary Garth money if she agrees to retrieve his will from his iron chest so he can alter it. Mary refuses, highlighting her moral integrity. "Tonight he had not once snapped, and for the first hour or two he lay remarkably still, until atlast Mary heard him rattling his bunch of keys against the tin box which he always kept in the bed beside him. About three o'clock he said, with remarkable distinctness, 'Missy, come here I'" (Book 4, Chapter 33).
