Grandcourt and Gwendolen and the Poisoned Diamonds

Gwendolen sits with her hands clutching her head and the "poisoned diamonds" on the ground, which she has just received in a letter from Lydia Glasher, Grandcourt's previous paramour. The diamonds had been Grandcourt's gift to Lydia, a symbol of his broken promise. Gwendolen has also broken her promise to Lydia that she would never marry Grandcourt (Book 4, Chapter 31).
