Description
In a narrow Florentine street defined by tall stone façades, arched windows, and a distant tower, the city stands momentarily quiet before the Peasants’ Fair fills it with crowds. Moving through this enclosed space, Tito Melema enters the city at a threshold moment, just before its streets become the stage for his encounters with Bratti and Tessa.
"The moving crowd and the strange mixture of noises that burst on him at the entrance of the piazza, reminded Tito of what Nello had said to him about the Fierucoloni, and he pushed his way into the crowd with a sort of pleasure in the hooting and elbowing that filled the empty moments..” ("The Peasants' Fair", Chapter 14).
