Description
In Florence, Romola walks through the city weighed down by doubt about Savonarola and fear that her godfather may be caught in a political plot. As she leaves the church without comfort, she unexpectedly encounters Baldassarre, deepening her sense of uncertainty and foreboding.
"She rose from her knees that she might hasten to her sick people in the courtyard, and by some immediate beneficent action, revive that sense of worth in life which at this moment 'vas unfed by any wider faith. But when she turned round, she found herself face to face with a man who was standing only two yards off her. The man was Baldassarre" ("A Prophetess", Chapter 52).
