This scene depicts the climactic union of Dorothea and Will Ladislaw, where they finally acknowledge their love amid a symbolic storm. This scene is pivotal because the pair finally denounces social expectations, and Dorothea gives up her wealth so they can be together. "She did not move, and he came towards her withmore doubt and timidity in his face than she had ever seen before. He was in a state of uncertainty which made him afraid lest some look or word of his should condemn him to a new distance from her; and Dorothea was afraid of her own emotion" (Book 8, Chapter 83).
