Dorothea Finds her Husband in the Garden

This illustration portrays Dorothea’s discovery of Casaubon, unconscious in the garden, having suffered a heart attack. This effectively prevents Dorothea from forfeiting her intellectual autonomy. She had been about to promise to complete his life's work. "Still he was motionless; and with a sudden confused fear, she leaned down to him, took off his velvet cap, and leaned her cheek close to his head, crying in a distressed tone--'Wake, dear, wake! Listen to me. I am come to answer'" (Book 5, Chapter 48).
