Mr. Riley remarks that The History of the Devil is not quite the right book for a little girl, Maggie defends her reading by mentioning that she also has Pilgrim's Progress, where "there’s a great deal about the Devil in that". She even offers to show Mr. Riley "the picture of him in his true shape, as he fought with Christian", describing how Tom coloured the Devil's picture with a black body and red, fiery eyes. (Book 1, Chapter 3)
