Title

Mrs. Farebrother welcomed the guest

Alt Text Description

Grayscale illustration of two men, one standing and one sitting, speaking with an old woman sitting in a chair.

Description

This scene illustrates Lydgate’s visit to the Farebrother house and his introduction to Mrs. Farebrother and her son, the Reverend. Importantly, this scene subtly highlights the contrast between the the town’s social circles. "Mrs Farebrother welcomed the guest with a lively formality and precision. She presently informed him that they were not often in want of medical aid in that house" (Book 2, Chapter 17).
