Gwendolen stands in a sitting room with her fingers interlocked across from Grandcourt. During this scene he propses Gwendolen. Here, Gwendolen makes a pivotal decision that will later bring conflict and internal distress: although initially intending to refuse him, the prospect of escaping poverty and helping her mother lead Gwendolen to accept (Book 3, Chapter 27).
