Gwendolen is next to a road riding side-saddle as Grandcourt rides alongside her. Gwendolen’s desire for autonomy is depicted in this scene, where she resists Grandcourt’s controlling behavior during their ride together. She debates whether to accept Grandcourt's advances. She doesn't love him, but sees the benefit of living a life of luxury that also would provide for her mother (Book 2, Chapter 13).
