On a roadside outside Florence, Romola meets Savonarola, who recognizes her despite her disguise and confronts her decision to leave. His words quiet her resistance and mark the moment she turns back toward her duty in Florence. “She had started up with defiant words ready to burst from her lips, but they fell back again without utterance.
