'I am waiting for something else.'

Maggie tells Philip "I am waiting for something else" during their second significant meeting in the Red Deeps, which took place nearly a year after their first reunion there, in early April. Philip had expressed his hope that their belonging to each other would bring him happiness despite other difficulties. Maggie's response, "Yes, Philip; I should like never to part; I should like to make your life very happy. I am waiting for something else. I wonder whether it will come," indicates her desire for their union but also a sense of uncertainty or anticipation of a future event that might change their situation. This statement occurs just before Maggie kisses Philip for the second time. (Book 5, Chapter 4)
