'My little lady, where are you going to?'

Maggie had decided to run away to live with the Gypsies (Eliot's term) because she felt unhappy at home after an incident with Tom and Lucy. She believed the Gypsies would respect her. After a long walk, during which she had an unsettling encounter with two men, Maggie finally saw a small Gypsy tent with smoke rising from it. A tall female figure, who turns out to be a young woman with a baby, came out to meet Maggie as she approached the encampment and addresses Maggie with the question, "'My little lady, where are you going to?'". (Book 1, Chapter 11.)
