'Mary looked up with some roguishness at Fred'

Title

'Mary looked up with some roguishness at Fred'

Alt Text Description

Colored illustration of a sitting woman and man leaning his elbow on the mantle.

Description

This illustration depicts the lighthearted affection shared between Mary Garth and Fred Vincy, whose authentic relationship contrasts with the calculated ambitions of those vying for Peter Featherstone’s inheritance. Mary’s "roguishness" and Fred’s adoration stand apart from the greed surrounding them. "Mary looked up with some roguishness at Fred, and that look of hers was very dear to him, though the eyes were nothing more than clear windows where observation sate laughingly" (Book 2, Chapter 14).
