Mr. Tulliver, upset that Mr. Wakem has bought Dorlcote Mill and asked Tulliver to work for him, makes Tom write in the family Bible that Mr. Tulliver will work for Wakem but wishes evil upon Wakem. Then he tells Tom to write that he, Tom, will avenge his father one day. Mrs. Tulliver and Maggie look on with reproach and horror. (Book 3, Chapter 9)
