“It could hardly have referred to her contributions to the Coventry Herald, the weekly newspaper which Charles Bray purchased in June 1846 to fight the opposition of the Coventry Standard to his projects for reform. Mary Ann wrote a number of anonymous articles for the Herald. The earliest I have identified is a review of three books: Christianity in Its Various Aspects and The Jesuits, both by Quinet and Michelet, and Priests, Women, and Families by Michelet alone, which appeared 30 October 1846. A brief notice of Gilbert a Beckett's Comic History of England with Leech's illustrations followed, 4 November. In December she began a series of five loosely connected essays under the title 'Poetry and Prose from the Notebook of an Eccentric', which, as Thomas Pinney remarks in reprinting them in Essays of George Eliot (1963), anticipates the form she returned to in her last book, Impressions of Theophrastus Such. 'Vice and Sausages', published 26 February 1847, is a satirical squib on the Coventry police inspector John Vice.” Gordon S. Haight, George Eliot: A Biography. Oxford University Press 1968. p. 61.
