George Eliot to Emanuel Deutsch, 13 August 1867. “We get our Pall Mall three days old, and read it duly, so that we have been much obliged to you for the article on Fuad Pasha's Confession. Of course no one else than you could write it, and unless, with that treasure of knowledge you carry within you, you do a great deal more of the same sort, you will deserve the anathemas of men to come, who will lack something you might have given them. Especially, pray return often to that note of reproach for unashamed ignorance, and insist that the conscientious effort to know is part of religion. See how I take it on me to tell you your duty! But as a German, you are bound to be reverent to rather silly old women and take them for prophetesses.” GEL 4: 385
