1861-11-05: "5. Read Cicero de Officiis, and began Petrarch's letters. Walked with G. into town, and looked at old books. Dreadfully depressed about myself and my work." Diary 1861-1877 104 1861-11-08: "8. Read Politian's Letters and Petrarch's. Then Corniani and Manni. In the afternoon went shopping with G. to Redmayne's and then to the London Library where I looked through Selden's Titles of Honour and brought away Monteil, XVth century." Diary 1861-1877 104^^This text was published much later than Eliot could have read it, but it is the earliest collection of Petrarca's letters we could find that likely contains what she read in 1861. She may have read Petrarca's "The Ascent of Mount Ventoux (To Dionisio da Borgo San Sepolcro)" as well, though this is a single letter and likely not what she is noting here.
