George Eliot to Mme Eugene Bodichon, 6 July 1872. “I suppose Bessie is in France now. She made no sign of herself to me after calling with her husband one Sunday in the early Spring. If Miss Edwards is with you give my love to her and tell her she should get the volumes of a very cheap publication -- the Deutscher Novellenschatz -- that is to say if she doesn't already know them as well as I do. Some of the tales are remarkably fine. I am reading aloud the last three volumes, which are even better than the others (George just tells me that he has already recommended this, so pray excuse me for the needless repetition.) I have just been so deeply interested in one of the stories "Diethelm von Buchenberg," that I want everybody to have the same pleasure, who can read German.” GEL 5: 289-90
