George Eliot to Arthur Helps, London, 12 January 1868. "I am sincerely obliged by the handsome gift you have sent me. I think I have read the Queen's Journal with more sympathy because I am a woman of about the same age, and also have my personal happiness bound up in a dear husband whose loss would render my life simply a series of social duties and private memories. . . . I like that page in which the Queen prays for the very house which has sheltered her happily.
