Evidence

"[George Eliot] and [George Henry Lewes] returned to the Priory 23 September 1875. Finding the drawing room still unpapered and the whole house smelling of paint, they set out the next morning for Shrewsbury. After three days there they went on for brief stays at Aberystwith, Barmouth, Dolgelley, Carnarvon, Llanberis, and Chester, reaching home 9 October to find "the Priory still in the hands of the paper hangers!" During their trip [Eliot] read aloud Jane Austen's Emma, Dickens's Uncommercial Traveller, Turgenev's Nouvelles Moscovites and Récits d'un chasseur, and Sterne's Sentimental Journey." GEL 6: 171f
