1857-03-[?]: Recollections of the Scilly Isles, 1857. “Our readings aloud were Cromwell's Letters, Aurora Leigh (for the 2d time), Life of Charlotte Bronte, Maury's Physical Geography of the Sea, 912 Twelfth Night and Macbeth, and Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. I read the Œdipus Tyrannus and the Œdipus Coloneus, De Quincey's Glories of Stage Coach Travelling and Revolt of the Tartars, and the greater part of Shelley's poems.” GEL 2: 358
1857-04-09: "Wrote nothing this morning. At 1/2 past eleven we went out hunting on Carne Thomas, but withoutmuch success. I was feeling poorly and unable to exert myself. In the evening I began the "Life of Charlotte Bronte" aloud. Deeply interesting. My head was terribly bad." Diary 1854-1861 68
1859-11-20: “Sunday 20. A headache this morning induced us to give up work and walk in Richmond Park, where there is still much beauty of tint from the red brown of the ferns and the yellow elm leaves. George called at Professor Owen's, and I walked home alone. We are reading aloud Huber's History of Bees, and the Life of Charlotte Bronte for the second time.” Diary 1854-1861 82
