Mary Sibree, later Mary Cash, was a friend, pupil, and correspondent of George Eliot's. The two remained friends for years, since their first meeting in Foleshill (Coventry) in 1841. Sibree provided details of Eliot's life in Foleshill to John Walter Cross, including the only first-hand account that exists of Eliot's loss of faith, recalling how deeply Eliot was moved.
