Description

Eleanor Cross was the sister of John Cross, who became George Eliot's husband in 1880. Eliot was a friend and mentor to Eleanor several years before the women became sisters-in-law.  Eleanor (and John) lived with their mother and nursed her through her fatal illness in 1878. Following George Eliot's sudden death in 1880, Eleanor again moved in with her brother John.
