- The opening volume of “Middlemarch,” which is entitled, “Book I: Miss Brooke” introduces us to a district in the north-east country of Loamshire, and to a goodly number of people residing there. We must confess that the introduction has at first sight a cold and formal air–– that the strangers are more or less strangers to us at the close of the book –– that they have revealed too little of their possible combinations and actions to make us deeply interested in their future –– and that the reader must wait for some further travelling in their company before he finds that he and they have been shaken well together, and understand each other.
