Description

George Eliot began her friendship with Frederick Lehmann and his wife Nina in 1864. Their relationship illustrates Eliot's status as an esteemed author had overcome the scandal of her irregular marriage with George Henry Lewes. The Lehmanns were a wealthy family and Frederick purchased the translation rights of Felix Holt, the Radical for his brother, Emil.
