Fields, Annie Adams (1834-1915)

Title

Fields, Annie Adams (1834-1915)

Description

Annie Adams Fields, wife of prominent American publisher James Fields, was a vastly important figure in literary culture throughout her life. After marrying Fields at age 20, their home became a literary salon that fostered connections with dozens of the most famous novelists of the time, including George Eliot. When in London, she met Eliot, paying two visits to her home in 1869. After her husband's death in 1881, Fields began living with Sarah Orne Jewett in what historians now believe to be a long-term romantic relationship, one of the first known 'Boston marriages.'
