Description

Julie Covelle D'Albert-Durade was an artist who specialized in painting flowers, and was married to Francois D'Albert-Durade. She met George Eliot when Eliot boarded in the D'Albert-Durade residence in Geneva, Switzerland. The two fostered a very close relationship while Eliot lived in Geneva, with Eliot calling her 'Maman.' Eliot exchanged letters with the D'Alberts for many years after, although Francois admitted to destroying many of their letters to protect her privacy.
