Description

John Cross' brother, William Cross, lived with his mother and sisters after his father's death. He joined his sister Mary Finlay in setting up a soup kitchen in Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War. When John Cross threw himself from a hotel window on his 1880 wedding tour after marrying George Eliot, William went to Venice to provide support and accompanied the couple part of the trip back to England.
