The head of the leading family in Treby Magna; an open-handed, quick-tempered man of sixty. An aristocratic old Tory, he is prepared to welcome Harold Transome cordially until he finds that the latter has declared himself a Radical. He does not resume friendly relations with Harold until the scene of Mr. Jermyn's revelation to Harold.
