Christian, Maurice

Title

Christian, Maurice

Description

Assumed name of Henry Scaddon. A clever but not very successful adventurer. In his youth he had been wild, dissipating his fortune and committing forgery. Later he had been a fellow prisoner-of-war in France with Maurice Christian Bycliffe, and by exchanging names with him had helped Bycliffe to escape to England. He kept the name of Maurice Christian and much later enters the service of Philip Debarry, which brings him to Treby. There he sees Esther Lyon, learns from Mr. Lyon that she is Bycliffe's daughter, and then sells this information to Harold Transome.
