Middlemarch

Title

Middlemarch

Description

Middlemarch,A provincial town, the principal scene fo the novel, Middlemarch. eorge Eliot's impressions of her residence in Coventry provide the original for the picture of "Middlemarch", although the picture is not developed with the detail shown in the portrait of Nuneaton as "Milby". (See Stephen, George Eliot, p. 34, 174; also his article on George Eliot in the Dictionary of National Biography.) One of the recognitions of George Eliot's connexion with Coventry is the decision to name all new streets opened in the Radford Garden suburbs (a region which was once one of her favourite walks) from her novels, and of the two streets, opened by 1922, one is "Middlemarch Road" and the other "Lydgate Road". Coventry has also a "George Eliot Road".
