Zecca, or Mint

Title

Zecca, or Mint

Description

Zecca, or Mint,Its car figures in the San Giovanni procession in Florence. "Improved tast, with Cecca to help it, had devised for the magnificent Zecca a triumphal car like a pyramidal catafalque, with ingenious wheels warranted o turn all corners easily. Round the base were living figures of saints and angels arrayed in sculpturesque fashion; and on the summit, at the height of thirty feet, well bound to an iron rod and holding an iron cross also firmly infixed, stood a living representative of St. John the Baptist." The Mint occupied the site of the present Post Office, and the old Mint, the Zecca Vecchia, was behind the church of Santa Croce, but this was given up in 1252 when the new Mint was built.
