Palazzo Vecchio (Real)

Title

Palazzo Vecchio (Real)

Description

Palazzo Vecchio (Real),The home of the Gonfaloniere and Signoria, the seat of the government of Florence. Savonarola is imprisoned here. The Palazzo Vecchio, on the Piazza della Signoria, was befun in 1298 from Arnolfo di Cambio's designs and completed and extended at later dates. Until 1532 it was the seat of the government of Florence, and then for awhile the palace of Cosimo I. Since 1871 it has been a civic building. Its earlier name was Palazzo del Popolo, dei Signori, or della Signoria, and Guido Biagi points out that it could not have been called Palazzo Vecchio in the time of Romola, as that name was not used until 1550.
