Marzocco (Real)

Marzocco (Real),The stone lion, emblem of the Florentine Republic. The Marzocco, or stone lion, was set up in various parts of Florence. The one which was in the Piazza della Signoria at the time of Romola was by Donatello, and represented a lion seated on his haunches with the right forepaw resting on a shield on which the Florentine lily was carved. This has been replaced by a bronze cast and the original moved to the Museo Nazionale.
