Bargello, The (Real)

Bargello, The (Real),Public building in Florence; within its court Bernardo del Nero and the other Mediceans were executed. The Palazza del Podesta, on the Via del Proconsolo, commonly known as the Bargello, was from about 1261 the residence of the Podesta or chief magistrate of Florence ; from 1574 it was a prison and office of the chief of police. Now it is a National Museum.
