Gypsies

Title

Gypsies

Description

A band of Gypsies, encamped on Dunlow Common; Maggie Tulliver, unhappy and jealous of her cousin, Lucy Deane, runs away to join them and impress them with her superior knowledge. Maggie's adventure with the Gypsies is one of the incidents in Mill on the Fhss, which are partly autobiographic. George Eliot, in her childhood, had an experience with a band of Gypsies, though the details of her adventure may not have agreed with Maggie's. (See Deakin, Early Life of George Eliot, p. 18.) The Gypsies are mentioned also in the autobiographic poem, Brother and Sister.
