Isidor, Father

Duke Silva's uncle, a Prior of San Domingo and an Inquisitor; "a holy, high-born, stern Dominican." He is bitterly opposed to Duke Silva's proposed marriage to Fedalma, on the ground that she is of alien race and a heretic. Finding it impossible to dissuade the Duke, he is on the point of having her seized by the Inquisition, but she escapes him by going off with her father, Zarca. When Zarca and the Moors take Bedmar, the Prior is captured; Zarca saves him from immediate death by burning at the hands of the mob, and has him hanged instead. Before his death he sees Duke Silva in Gypsy dress and curses him as a traitor.
