The George Eliot Archive provides digital versions of George Eliot’s fiction from the 1878 Cabinet Edition of George Eliot’s Works and most of the first editions. Page images preserve the appearance of the original publications and provide page numbers for citation. The first editions and the Cabinet Edition allow readers to study Eliot’s revisions.

The Cabinet Edition

Published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1878, the Cabinet Edition was the last collection of Eliot’s works published during her lifetime. She personally oversaw the revisions, ensuring that these texts represent her final, authoritative vision. As such, the Cabinet Edition has become the scholarly standard for citing Eliot’s works and remains the most reliable source for accurate quotations.

The George Eliot Archive has made the Cabinet Edition freely available online since our launch in 2019. The texts are searchable and downloadable. The Cabinet Edition files provide the textual basis for the TEI-encoded XML files available through the George Eliot Text Explorer and the George Eliot Archive GitHub repository.

The George Eliot Text Explorer supports searches across Eliot’s publications for words, phrases, people, and places. The tool provides a reliable way to verify quotations from Eliot's works.
